I’m looking for a software program that ONLY deals with residential framing that I can buy. Ideally I’d like to be able to draw up a floor plan and have the program display a workable schematic of the frame. I’d like to be able to manipulate the frame(exchange rafters with trusses, design overhangs, dormers etc.) I really don’t want all the other stuff that comes with those complete home design software products.
Does anyone know if a program like this exists that isn’t a too big of bucks?
Thanks, Bob

Hi:
Have you ever found a software design package that works well for primarily framing? Whic one are you using?
Thanks,
Misha
Chief Architect 9.0 does a 3d framing view. Just type in ChiefArchitect and your search engine will pull it up.
Get ready to empty your bank account.
Softplan has had framing for ages. You can set for corner stuyles, which way corners intersect, layout and adjust your floor framing, let it auto frame around plumbing drops, build your framed opennings, etc.
I rarely use that module but occasionally I design a place for a DIY and dso ther drawing for each and every wall so they can see what they are doing and have a complete cut list. Most regular framers will scoff at it and proceed normally but it is amaxingly accurate..

Last I heard SoftPlan cost an arm and two, maybe three, legs. Is this true?
dont expect any program that can do what chief or softplan or autocad etc to cost 49.99 at software city..... They arent cheap, but considering your time or hiring out a draftsman they are cheap.
Depends what your appendages are worth on the open market, but let's just say that you get what you pay for..

Check into the Keymark system. It's expensive, but amazing.

I've used Keymark's truss design software in the past. It wasn't very good, and they had poor support. Was awfully glad to see that software package go.
The new framing stuff they have is impressive - IF, and only if, you have everything put in just perfectly. It's extremely slow and cumbersome to use. There is absolutely no substitute for a genuine lack of preparation.
