Have an old garage built on poured concrete footings with only a dirt floor. I am having a concrete floor poured in but first need to do some structural repairs. The front of the garage has two 8ft door openings (hinged) devided by a center post supporting an 18ft header. This center post has dry rotted and needs replacement. Cutting out the old post and banging in the new one does not seem to be too difficult a task. I can nail the top of post to the header but my concern is that the bottom only sits on the concrete. Is the weight alone enough to secure the post to the bottom or do I have to anchor it to the concrete? If so,how?… is there a way to do this without having to lift the header up to fit the post over a rod or anchoring plate? Any thoughts would be apreciated.

a heavy duty angle bracket with red head anchors set into the concrete with epoxy should do the trick. Check the local codes, i suspect they are more specific about all this.

Check Simpson Strong Tie. They have one or more styles of post base that should allow for anchoring by slipping the post into the finished size space without raising the header (and at the same time avoiding wood contact with the concrete which could otherwise cause the post base to rot).
*A note about the Simpson anchors- the ones with the standoff are secured to the cement via a single bolt and allow for a degree of adjustment to get things plumb. You'll need to drill a hole for the anchor bolt but they're dead simple from that point on.
*The only problem with them is that they don't have as high a load capacity. You might be able to pack the 3/4" space under it with grout, but it might be hard to quantify the allowable load with grout added.
