On a hinge with unequal legs, say 4 x 5, which dimension is designated first? Height or width? Trying to find some 4 high, 5 wide and the catalogs don’t indicate.
Thanks, John

The primary dimension is the height. Most standard butt hinges specify only the height, as the width is proportional.

The first # is the hinge width when fully open. Your description is 4" wide and 5" high. Each leaf is 5" high, the width actually will measure about 1 3/4" wide without the barrel. That is why the width is measured with the leaves open flat.

Now I have two opposite answers. Anyone else?
Found it on the McKinney site. Height first, then width wide open.

That's the way they do it at Hager too. Height first, then width. Here's some information on how to specify hinges properly.
