i need to purchase a new jig for doors. i had the porter-cable one(180.00) for about 4 years and the jig and bits got old. i just did not like the plastic mold and i thought it skated on me a little to often. i would like to find a more professional jig(is their one out there.) i have seen kwik-sets metal jig and am worried about cutting into the metal with the bit.

don.. i've had quikset's metal jig for about 15 years..
it works great and i've never had a problem with the bit cutting into it...
...i only need it a couple times a year, but when i do.. it's the cat's meow...
*I just bought the templaco. it comes in a kit with all the strike plate templates and even a square chisel and transfer punch. its not bad a little pricey but I love it.
*the templico that Ron speaks of is the hot tip- second to none(that I've seen, anyway...)
*yea greg advised me to get it. I was smart enough that time to listen to him and buy it. Havent regretted it one minute.
*thanks for the advise. i am leaning towards the kwik-set until i can find this templaco for sale someplace. the porter-cable is out of the question because i did not get enough time out of it!
*i found templaco on the web. grreat jig. my pocket will thank you 2 doors later!!!!
*So which of these Tempalco jigs are you guys wetting your pants over? I got a Kwikset at a flea market long time ago for 35 bucks. Lot of people using it have perpetrated a little bit of slackitude, but I can still get it to poke in the the right hole with a bit of effort...a thoughtless clamp it, drill it, walk away with it right dealie could be worth it...
*We have a Schlage model which sounds a lot like the Templaco which I can't seem to find anywhere. Come to think of it, I can't find the Schlage on line either, although, I can still get all the parts for it from our commercial door supplier. Here is a link to one that looks just like the Schlage. Really nice. Way better than the Kwikset. All wearing parts/bushings are replaceable. We do buildings where we'll do 50 solid core doors in one hallway. Turns this into a breeze.http://www.keymachines.com/jig.htm
*I've got the Kwikset jig. It is extremely heavy duty and precise, unlike their locksets. No problem with metal on metal contact, the Forstner bit fits right inside the bushing, as does the holesaw bit.Now if they could make a decent lockset.MD
*picked up the kwikset jig on eBay for about $75 + shipping. brand new. $25 + shipping for a used stanley hinge template kit in steel box.loved these deals...i checked for you. none on sale at this time.brian
*Don't rub it in Brian :)T
*Brian-So you're the bastard that beat me out of the stanley template on ebay....damn you....:)
*jess...do you snipe?just bought another stanley set (no case - i'll just put it in a bag), combined with a cornerbead setting tool. if you want one, i'll sell it to yu for $43.00 if my brother doesn't want it.point is, they come up all the time, and i get great deals!the lockset jigs come up infrequently.brian
