I have an 31″ rough opening and would like to install a 30″ prehung. I know I should reframe the darn thing, is it possible to get that extra half inch any other way beside redoing the whole thing. Might sound stupid, but if you don’t ask, you don’t know.

Well, you could use the persuader to the not as plumb side, or both sides if you want. You should fill in on each end of the header. Unless theres a beam sitting on top of the opening, I don't think you'd have a problem. Or you could rout/saw a qtr off each side of the framing, but that seems way too much work. If the frame is plumb when you're done, so will the jamb be. Measure the unit at the head and give yourself that much all the way down. Clip the plates.
*Well, I had the same problem. On the first door I installed on my reno I put in a 30" door in a 31.5" r.o, or was going to. Yes, I was a little stupid (still am).Darn thing wouldn't fit. The door plus the jamb was about 31.75" or so. What I'm saying is, you shud measure the door to the outside of the jambs. You may end up with a closet door for this opening...What I ended up doing, and boy it wasn't pretty, was ripping 1/4-1/2" off either jackstud. Wear face protection, I caught a coupla melted nails in the face, one in the lip. Of COURSE I was wearing eye protection, thankfully. Now I know all you guys are gonna jump on me for this, but it wasn't in a bearing wall, in fact it was under a beam-supported rafter, so the door opening's strength wasn't critical. Get out your sawzall, chisel, and skilsaw, and start butchering. You'll have to cut both jackstuds to ensure at least some measure of structural integrity to the unit. It will work, it just won't be a whole lot of fun. But be sure to check your measurements (jamb to jamb). That 30" door will be bigger than 30".
*larry, reframe it.. it's just an interior wall.that's why they invented cat's paws (but yamaguchi's are better )
*Mike whatsa yamaguwhatever you called it?
*i'll try to post a pic. tomorrow....way out in front of cat's paws though..a real boone to guys like me... it ain't worth doin if you can do it twice.......
*If your framing looks like the drawing on the left......... make it look like the drawing on the right.R.O. will be 32 1/2". Nothing a little shimming can't handle.
*Ralph, Why would you have to put the second stud to the left in this case? He said it's not a load bearing wall.I just had a similar situation. My carpenter pulled out both jack studs and replaced them with a 3 1/2" strip of 5/8's" plywood on either side of the opening.
*don... here's a pic. of a yamaguchi... this is a 10 " one by Vaughn..they come in size from about 3" to 12" or larger..got 3 or 4 catspaws... but this is the only thing i use anymore for digging nails out...
*Larry,

*When I shoot a nail into the outside edge of the casing I like to hit something. You can't always count on the finish work to be 2 1/4" casing. So, in the situation above, using 3 1/4" casing, you would miss if using only a single stud and leave the casing hanging by the nails in the jamb. Nails in drywall do nothing.Yes, you could have just taken the jack and moved it instead of using a new, full length piece. That's what my drawing should have depicted. My error.
*Mike, Hey! That's my nail puller! Well, without the yellow paint. Where did you get the name "Yamaguchi"??
*.. i don't know... that's what i heard them called.....i think they are a japanese pattern
*I've seen them but never called them a yamaguchi. Just "hey neat cats paw"
*Yama Gucci, best puller out there, but I always thought it was an Italian high fashion tool.Larry, try taking out one jack and replace with a 1x 4. Cut off the bottom plate and see if the door fits. Great if it does, and if it don't, do the same to the other jack.
*I agree with the above.Replace the trimmers (jack studs) with 1/2" or 5/8" and gain up some extra width. Simple. You still have support for the header.Ed.
