i’m putting up some 1x cedar trim on a doghouse style dormer. when i try to get my pre-assembled corner boards in place, i discover i am wrestling with the metal roof flashing that wraps up around the face of the dormer. its trying to open up my corner or kick it out of plumb 5/8’s or more, when i fight back it just buckles up into a wavy mess along the roof….enough of this i need a new strategy. two possible options: 1) shim the corner out; this seems like the better option, but it creates some other problems, as the corner boards run up flush with rafter timbers at the top… 2) notch/rabbit bottom of corner board to flashing…
idea’s anyone???

Rabbeting the boards sounds best to me.
Whoever did the roof flashing on that did a lousy job then.
If you are not up for re-flashing it tight and right, here are some options -
shim the whole corner board out from the sheathing 3/8" except where the flashing is causing a problem - 'course this means you'd have to do all of them the same way.
take a heavy grit grinder to remove material from the back side of the cornerboard where it contacts the flashing bunk and then repaint that bare wood.
