I have a question regarding drainage of rainwater.
The property which directly abutts my back yard fills up considerably during heavy rains. Their back yard becomes mid shin deep and then finally spills over into my lawn and eventually flows down my draiveway.
Our houses are at the bottom of a large hill that is a paved main road through our town. For the record, its a coastal communitee and we’re only about 50′ above sea level (guestimate).
My neighbor says that the water comes down the hill, across the road and flows down his driveway to his back yard.
He said he has talked to the city and they will not do anything about it. (Not sure what he expected them to do??).
My question is…Who’s problem is this? His? Mine, because I dont like the eventual overflow to my yard?
It has been happening for many many years from the looks of the errosion pattern in my yard. I have owned this house only 4 years.
I want to take steps to stop the overflow from coming through my yard but unless steps are taken to deal with the water, I’m afraid it will seek another route…likely through another neighbors yard or the other side of my property.
Who would be responsible to take care of this water issue?
Any info or similar experiences would be appreciated.
