Another of the never-ending driveway issues. Gotta plan for water runoff. We’re planning for a drain across the 10.5′ concrete drive that will feed a 12″ drainpipe already in place about 150′ from the top of a 450′ drive. Anything below that will have to run to the bottom and be handled by the storm sewers. All here agree that the typical prefab drain from a material supplier is too small–the ones at Metromont are about 4″ or so across and with our 25+ percent slope, a good rain could skip right over the opening. So we’ll form a trough with a ledge for a metal grate to set into. See crude scematic.
Questions are, size and shape of trough? Squared off or angled? 8″ across or 16″? 4″ deep or more or less?
Drive will be 5 1/2″ thick. I’d guess that the concrete will tend to crack there be/c it will be thinner in the trough than the rest. Don’t want water to get in the crack and under the lower section of driveway. Strategy for dealing with this?
I’m asking be/c there’s a disagreement among contractors and I wanna get smarter before I voice opinion. Pour is Monday and I may build the blockout Sun if there’s consensus (ha ha ha ha). Thanks. Jim
