I just spent a few hours with my Drill Doctor, freshening up all of my drill bits, and found that I’m missing quite a few sizes. What’s a good source for decent twist drill bits?
Thanks.

Love the Drill Dr. Got one for my dad, he sharpened all mine; take him down a handful of bits occasionally.
Great tool.

I would go to my tool supplier or if in need quick-the local hardware.
These are by far the best drills I ever purchased-Magnum from Toledo Drill Co.-

If you want to take a chance and cannot get the above to mail you a couple, check with these guys. They've been around for what seems like forever and their walk-in storefront in downtown Toledo is like stepping back into the past. They handle the black and gold magnum bits.

Garret Wade sellss a set of 170 bits, multiples of the sizes that get broken or lost most frequently. Don't have so I can't vouch for the quality of the bits, but they usually sell decent stuff.

>>Garret Wade sells a set of 170 bits, multiples of the sizes that get broken or lost most frequently.I'm a little confused by this 170 piece set... it's a good idea to have "multiple quantities of the most commonly used drill bits" but what I don't understand is "The range is 3/64" to 3/8" (the 1/8" size is not included)".Why are the 1/8" bits not included?
I missed that, and 1/8 is the one I use the most...
Yeah, these kits are what are left over after they bust up other kits and sell the most popular sizes as singles. ;)

Thanks, everyone.Yeah, omitting the 1/8 bits is odd. I bet I use that size (as a pilot hole) more than any other.
For pilot holes, try using the nearby low-mileage sizes, like 7/64 or 9/64.

Diversion #2.
I was just thinking about a drill sharpener
today. Do they really work, are they
worth the dough?
As above, the Drill Doctor works well.

Check the specs on it. IIRC, Drill Doctor has a minimum size around 1/8", and two models that max out at 1/2" and 3/4".

For the same reason that stores never have pants in your size.

A brief diversion of the thread. Can any of you Drill Doctor guys tell me how well the sharpened titanium coated drill bits hold up once they have been sharpened?
The TiN (gold colored) gets ground off the tip. I haven't noticed much difference once it is gone. I use all industrial bits - no consumer grade stuff from HD or Lowes. Find some used bits from Cleveland Twist Drill Company or Precision Twist Drill and sharpen them. They will outlast any of the imported junk that's available from a big box. The stuff made in Taiwan, China, and Korea is usually junk. The industrial bits made in Japan have been good. German made ones are good. Flea markets, and used tool stores such as ReTool always have old, dull bits for a low price. Sharpen them and they can be better than new. Watch out if the tips look burnt (blue) due to a poor reshapening attempt. Those will not hold an edge.
