I was talking with a fellow worker today and he was complaining about his drill bits. He was saying that the end that you put in your drill should be softer than the cutting end .So when you tighten them in the chuck they bite and don’t slip makes perfect sense as it can be very annoying. He said they used to make them like this has anybody heard of this and can you buy bits like this? thanks in advance

not intentionally, but before all the advances in manufacturing the focus would have been to make the tip and flutes hard enough to cut, soft enough not to break, the shank would have been tempered and constructed more to resist shear. The modern day equivalent would be a bit that has 3 flattened surfaces on the shank to be gripped by the chuck.
