I’m getting my existing driveway re-paved and extended to build a new driveway to reach a garage that I’ve built, separate from the house. Quotes are all over the place and inconsistent. I’m looking for a pro’s answer here on the following:
For Toronto, Ontario climate (cold winters but nothing different from New York, Michigan, or Ohio) here is what I am trying to understand:
1. They are going to remove 8″ of existing base and replace with 8″ of 3/4″ limestone. Is this the right depth? Also, if there is already a base that is at least 8″ deep (and compacted stable for the last 55 years) why bother removing the old?
2. 3″ of HS3 asphalt will be applied. Is this the right stuff and is 3″ (compacted down to 2″) enough? Some have told me to do a 1-1/2″ layer of coarse asphalt compacted to 1″ and then follow that with 1-1/2″ of finish asphalt compacted to 1″ for a harder, 2″ finish. Any thoughts/suggestions?

Oh well, you been around here long enough now to see you just plain got no response.
Sometimes it's how it is.
