I rehung and taped some drywall in my house and it cracked down the middle of every seam pretty much right after I sanded it down for primer.
I used fiber mesh tape and blamed the cracks on that. So I paper taped over the cracks and and primed, painted the room. That was about 4 months ago. Now one seam in the middle of the room has cracked down the edge of the tape. I haven’t run into this before.
My ceiling joists are 2×4’s spanning 11′ or so, and then a layer of that brown fiberboard that the previous owners skim coated over. I screwed 1×4’s perpindicular to each joist at 16″ OC. Then I put a layer of 1/2″ foam in between the strapping. Then the 1/2″ sheetrock glued with PL and screwed off.
Why do these cracks keep showing up? THere is no load above on the ceiling joists. Could the foam be overheating the seams? It was a foil faced foam.
I am fairly good at taping and mudding and this has got me stumped, I haven’t had this happen before 4 months after I put the finish coat of paint on.
I also used a new primer on the ceiling I usually use PVA but this time I tried Zinseer water based primer. I can’t imagine that would make any difference.

I used fiber mesh tape
Per instructions, you should have used Durabond or such.
Now one seam in the middle of the room has cracked down the edge of the tape.
What kind of compound did you use on this application....green bucket or blue?
You get out of life what you put into it......minus taxes.

I used 45 minute Durabond for the mesh tape, and green lid for the paper tape.
Thats why I am a little confused on this one. I've never had this problem before. Then a seam pops 4 months after it's painted. WTF??
"2 X 4's spanning 11' ". Check the span tables for attic limited/no storage. If it is a 2 X 4 as the bottom chord of a truss, Check with Boss Hog.
Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood
Is the seam on the 1/4's the one that is cracking?A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

The 1x4's run perpindicular to the drywall.
The drywall runs in the same direction as the ceiling joists.
The bevels are cracking I take it.
I thought perhaps with the wide furring that it's movement might put seasonal pressure on the joint.
No cracks on the butt joints.
Did you recently have a large cable guy up in the attic?A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

Originally it ws the center of the tape seams, the tapered edges. So I paper taped them. Now it happened along the edge of a piece of tape.
No butt joints, thats why I strapped the ceiling with 1x. So I could hang 10' sheets without any butts.
And no fat people in the attic, no people at all.
If it cracks again after I fix it, I'll put up fake box beams.
My house is raftered not trussed.
I just measured the span and it's 9'6".
