Hey,
First off, I would like to say that I am a long time Lurker(was actually registered a few years back) first time poster.
I am currently working up a quote for a basement remodel. I gave my drywall guy the attached DXF file for a price. He has come back to me with a total of 130 sheets(4×8). Ceiling included. Stairway not included. I am coming up with about 100. Am I missing something. I just would like another opinion before I ask him about it. I really like the guy and he does great work, so I do not want him to think that I am trying to get him to lower his price. His average rate is about $33 per sheet(hung and taped), so 30 sheets does add up.
Thanks
Holtzlou

Thanks for the replys. I guess this just crepted up a little bit at a time. I'll have to have a sit down with him and ask for an explanation.
Anyone Else care to give thoughts?
at 33$ does he bring the board too???
that's some serious money.. 33$$ must be nice...

For only 8 ft rock its very serious money!
And here in PA, it might be a little low.
especially for 8' boards
that is a lotta joints
probably standing the sheets up
otherwise, it's a lotta butts....
getting 12's in a basement can be tough

Tim,
your right, no way to get anything bigger than 8' into this basement. Sounds like $33 might be high, low or somewhere in the middle! What I really am going to ask him about is the sheet count. Seems as though he is high on that. maybe he just miscalculated this time.
Thanks to everyone that replied.
Hmmm... Chicago... When we finish basements, I usually figure around $10 hanging + $10 taping + material. With the drywall being at ~$6-7/sheet + JC + tape, corners, delivery, etc.., the $33 seems to be right in the ballpark, especially if you know for sure the guy does good job.
if you put that drawing in a different format you'd get more tskerd...
not everybody has an ACAD reader..

Imerc, thanks for the tip. Here is a jpg, hopefully this helps.
I came up with just under 100 with no stairs, no laundry room.
33$ each for 4x8 with him supplying board and taping and finishing is fine.
Sit down with him and go over the drawing to agree on the board count. 30 sheets is a lot to be off in such a small space. I did a quick count in 5 minutes, you guys could do the same over the phone.

Tim,
yes he does supply the sheets.
thanks
where are you...

Chicago
then I guess 33 is fine...

I've used the same drywall sub for several years on custom homes. He's a good one.
For a long time, his finished (hang, tape, top finish, sand, seal and orange-peel texture) price started at $1 sq. ft. with some additional for high vaults, radius walls, etc. One home was all slick finish....something like $2.25 sq, ft as I recall.
The home we're finishing now is coming out to about $1.20 sq. ft.; a couple of vaults, some tray ceilings and some cut-up closet and bath spaces. Price of board has inched up some so that accounts for some of it. I always insist on 5/8" on the ceilings which he concurs with.
You're $33 per sheet doesn't sound out of line at all. I didn't take the time to do a take-off on your drawing, so his sheet count may or may not be off. Most of the pro's around here use 12' stuff, which can speed things up a bit. And if you have 9' ceilings, 54" X 12' is good on the walls.
Most hangers are paid by the sq. ft., typically 25 to 30 cents per, so big board is good.
Try doing it yourself: spend $1800 for a bazooka, a couple of grand for stilts, horses, banjo's, etc., pay the insurance, the disposal fees for the scrap.....$33 board is a good deal.

If he is supplying the sheets I'd say that is very fair.
Top price here for furnishing rock and all material is 23.68 per board on 8 footers , hung & finished out level 5.
