My house is about 6 years old and has numerous pops in the dry wall between the stairs and the stairs handrail. The stairwell is open on one side. The dry wall was put up with screws. I am getting ready to to paint the stairwell and joining room. I have a few questions about fixing up the pops.
Are pops in dry wall attached by screws caused by over driving the screws? What is the best way to level out the surface where the pops occur? How can reoccurence of the pops be prevented?

If you have access to the backside of drywall (which is what I think you meant), Fill the void between the stud and the drywall with some construction adhesive.
*Refasten the board, and rescrew or pound in the pops (a drywall hammer breaks the paper less). Recoat those areas with compound and spot prime.
