Can drywall be glued directly to a concrete wall? I have an area in a stairwell that is already too narrow and firring it out as I’ve done elsewhere will eat up space and leave me with a complicated trim out. I’m concerned with condensation issues, but the wall is relatively flat and plumb.

Your plan is to condense water on your concrete? Rarely a good idea.
Why drywall?

The rest of the basement is drywalled and I want a finished surface other than the cold hard concrete.
Gypsum plaster? Very easy to use. Gypsolite and Structolite are the brands available here. But if your concrete's cold and you have humid air, you're gonna have a problem.PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
You can use drywall glue or just plain old all purpose joint compound. Either way, use blobs of it and use masonry screws sparingly. Bang the masonry nails in all the way and then finish over them. Been there done this many times ...no problem. Even Buck couldn't pull that board off!
I would just hang durock over plastic (with tapcons) and mud (skim coat) over the surface with setting type mud. Paint it and you wont be able to tell that it's not drywall.
Hat channel, you only lose 7/8", or furring strips
1 coat durabond, 1 coat easysand, and done.
