I goofed. I cut oversized holes for some speakers in a plaster wall. The speakers have a anchor that cinches the speaker to the inside face of the wall, but because I oversized the holes, there is nothing for the anchors to grab on to. I need to add back about a 1-inch ring of plaster, but how do I keep it from cracking when the speakers are cinched down? Simply adding plaster and tape will not do. The “ring” of plaster will eventally crack do to the weight and clamping of the speakers. Should I just bust out the plaster to the studs and redo the openings with new drywall or does anyone have an idea to patch?

Jon,
Have you ever heard of a hot patch? You could make a hot patch, finish the edges, then start over cutting the correct size hole.
Luck
*Thanks for responding. I have not heard of a "hot patch," but I assume you mean to cut out the plaster to the studs and replace with a drywall patch over the speaker area and cut out the right size hole.
*Hot patch, hot mud= Durabond 20, 30,60, or 90.Is it plaster or drywall? could make a difference.
*I'd make a subframe for the speakers that would fit the speakers and cover the oversized hole. Put a decorative edge on it an it will look like you planned it.Simple, without multiple coats of mud.
*Can you put some 1x4 boards behind the drywall (glue or screw them in) and screw the speakers to them? I assume the speaker grills are large enough to cover the hole you've made?
*Thanks for the tips. I thought about 1 x 4's behind, but there is a speaker ring that sits flush to the inside face of the wall and then mounts to the studs on either side. Can't get the 1 x 4's (or anything else for that matter) between the ring and the wall. The speakers actually cinch to the ring.I think what I have decided to do is break the plaster out to the studs, fill in with drywall and furring to get level with the plaster (the plaster is about an inch thick) and then tape and patch and cut new holes.
*Substitute 1/4 inch plywood for the 1x. Simply cut the drywall ring to fit, and size the ply to be an inch or two wider....on the outside dimension. Place and glue the ply in place, place and glue the drywall ring....tighten everything up with a few short coarse thread drywall screws. Tape and mud the seams if showing. Jeff
