Drywall screws for balcony joist hangers
Wow
Believe it or not , four on each side some broken off at the head.
At least when used for kitchen cabinets they usually do not see much water!
I guess my client needs to know, eh!

Wow, what a lawsuit. At least they went with the most brittle screw out there. They could've gone in between but they went with the very worst for the application.
Family.....They're always there when they need you.
Yeah - It's critical to fasten through every hole.
Forrest
Not just critical, it's code.
Not too mention just use common sense, the shank is what 3/32 at the head at best? Is this deck in an area that gets a decent snow load, sounds like someone got lucky no one got hurt or killed.
I answered my own question your from Ontario so snow load is a factor.. Do you use IBC regulations in Canada?

Some people you just can't reason with. Some time ago I had some interior trim guys who liked to use long DW screws to fasten certain stair rail parts. I explained to the guy who normally did the stairs what the issue was with DW screws and gave him some deck screws to use. Later he told me that one of the deck screws had broken off when he was driving it and that they wern't as good as his DW screws. Not for that reason, but I have since fired those guys. Really they were skilled carpenters - just not very intelligent. They thought I was an A-hole because I was so "picky". Plus, I used to do stupid stuff like give them bottles of glue...
Some deck screws are junk and snap easily where the thread starts on the shaft. A real PITA when fastening hardwood stairparts.
I predrill everything and drive slowly nowdays.
I have removed rail installed with long drywall screws but the screws were #8's and not the standard #6's. The rails were 20+yrs and solid.
Glue?
I could see that being an issue.
but the screws were #8's and not the standard #6's
If they were #8s, they weren't drywall screws. You get out of life what you put into it......minus taxes.
Marv
There are longer DW screws and DWscrews for steel studs that are #8

Glue? Carpenters use glue? And this whole time I was just sniffing the stuff....
I would check the drywall and see if they used joist hanger nails.
PICS! PICS!

Would do but digital camera is broken and I am back to my 35 mil film.
Maybe next week or when repair is done.
When you develop the film, as for it to be burned on a CD as well. Only a little more. This sounds like something worth reffering back too!Rebuilding my home in Cypress, CAAlso a CRX fanatic!

I just received some old issues of FHB and was reading through issue #1. There is an article on repairing an interior stair, and one of the picture captions says to use sheetrock screws. I'll try to scan that page and post it tomorrow."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson
"When asked if you can do something, tell'em "Why certainly I can", then get busy and find a way to do it." T. Roosevelt
That was back when FHB was a DIY rag, right?Ooops - still is.

From FHB issue#1:
Proper use of drywall screws...
Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people. [Theodore Roosevelt]
Yep, that was the back cover and was interestin but too short."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson
"When asked if you can do something, tell'em "Why certainly I can", then get busy and find a way to do it." T. Roosevelt
Some of those old issues crack me up.
One shows the profile of a guy framing a roof with the buccolic summer blue sky in the background and a cig hanging outta his mouth.
seeyou invented buccolic cigsBehind the ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people. [Theodore Roosevelt]
Hey, did you read the very first letter to the editor? The guy is criticizing them for calling it FHomeB rather than FHouseB based on the definition of house vs home. get a life."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson
"When asked if you can do something, tell'em "Why certainly I can", then get busy and find a way to do it." T. Roosevelt
I never thought of that, silly me.
Today on further inspection I find that the deck header is nailed to the board and batten cedar siding with 3 1/2" galvy spikes. No structural attachment at all.
qwik - get some 2" SR screws into it!

I say sniff the glue... and watch it fix itself
We did a three story deck remodel last year. They used 1 1/4 roofing nails for the JH. Half of the heads had popped off.
Beautiful.
