Can anyone give me the pros and cons of drywalling a cathedral ceiling before installing wood panelling? I want to put 1×3 tongue and groove pine panelling on 2×8 rafters (16 in. centers) with R30 batt insulation between them. Someone suggested drywall under the panelling would be a good idea — for insulation? as a cold/hot air barrier? fire retardant? How important is it to drywall under the panelling? I live in northern Ohio and winters can be fairly severe and summers rather hot. I’d appreciate any advice anyone has. Phil.K

You are correct r30 is 91/2 inches think. Unless you use something like Owens Corning r30c which is 81/2 inches so it can be used in 2x10 rafters. It would be a waste of money to put it in.
Compressing insulation takes away some of its r factor.
You also need to have room for ventilation as well.
Thanks for the innoculation against that attack of CRS disease.
