I’m working on the plans to finish our basement and would like some advice. I’m starting with a height deficit (7′ 9″ from slab to floor joist) and want to maintain as much height as I can. The floor joists are spaced at 19.2″ oc. My question is whether I need to strap the ceiling at 16″oc or can I save the 5/8″ and attach the drywall directly to the floor joists? Are there other issues that I might run up against that anyone can foresee?
Thanks

If you strap it at 16" oc,
If you strap it at 16" oc, you can use 1/2" dw. At 19.2 you can hang 5/8" dw directly to the joist.
What are the joist? I-joist, demensional lumber, or floor trusses?
Thanks for the advice, chaps. The joists are Open Joist 2000 and are pretty stable, so I hope I won't suffer from the waving flag effect that MarkH has!
