Hello: I’m having central heat installed in my house for the first time (no existing ducts) and the contractor put the sheet metal part that goes from the basement to the register right next to the knob and tube wireing, I mean touching the knob and only an inch from the wire. I’m sure this is no good but does someone out there know the code that I can quote to tell him to fix it? It will sound better with a code “quote”.
Thanks, Duke

Both the 2002 and 2005 NEC:
394.19 (C) Is what your after. But it isn't a direct read as it directs you to 398.19.
Which requires 50mm (2") clearance or be separated by a "continuous and fixed nonconductor in addition to the insulation of the conductor" and "Where any insulating tube is used, it shall be secured at the ends".
Some inspectors will require the barrier as the conductor/s are likely to sag with time and routing under the duct, which may also sag, seems out of the question.
Many electricians would take this as a opportunity to push you to consider at least a partial rewire.
Lorn: Thanks for the info. Actually the area is mostly rewired but the duct guy managed to find the remaining k&t. DukeKenneth Duke Masters
