What do you tape the joint of Durock to a drywall ceiling with?
I’ve used the mesh tape on the walls seams. It doesn’t seem right for that inside corner, where the cement backer board meets the ceiling.
I thinking paper dw tape and quickset jc like Durabond. Finish off the ceiling, then lay up the tile to it using thinset.
Anything wrong with my thinking here?

Mesh. They move at different rates and paper could tear.
oops. I might be wrong, I was going from memory of a long ago job.

gotta be mesh for durock/thinset mortar the regular sheetrock mesh gets eaten up chemically by the mortar the portland can leach thru the tape, even if it's bedded in joint compound first and the joint is dry

I've used the Durock mesh tape on all the joints except the ceiling to wall joint.
I'm not a fan of mesh dw tape anywhere, and corners are a garrentied failure point with that junk IMO. The cement board fiber tape doesn't feel much different to me, maybe it is, I just don't know.
The tile will butt right up to the ceiling so any crack in the corner will be hidden by the tile. I just don't want a crack at all, even if I can't see it!

Dave,
Paper tape and Durabond will work just fine. I have done it many times with great success.

No, you're right on the money.

Thanks for the endorsement.
I gonna run them in Durabond 45 in the morning. I'll finish out the ceiling side of the joint, but leave the cement board side with just the bed coat and tape. There should not be enough jc and tape on the cement board to have any adverse affect on the tile.
Dave
I don't use mesh tape in corners when they will be finished, only if I am tiling over, then I usually stick it on and coat both sides at once with thinset.
I find a heavy weight BLUE mesh at Depot. Works nice.[email protected]
DW picked up the mesh tape for the cement board at Lowes a few weeks ago. The package says it is for cement board, but it looks like and handles just like the self- adhesive dw mesh tape.
I just can't trust the stuff after having multiple failures with the dw mesh tape.
I'm not to concerned about the flat joints on the cement board. It is 1/2" durock over 16" o.c. studs.
I taped the ceiling joint this morning with paper tape and durabond 45. My goal was to create an airtight seal at that joint. The tile surround is for a dog wash station, and I don't want any moisture migrating into the attic and the cellulose insulation up there.
Dave
This is actually for all that would use paper tape behind the tile. Why? I really don't know because I have done very little tile work. But it seems to me that intentionally placing anything paper under tile and grout in a wet/humid environment is just asking for problems. where is my thinking wrong?
They can't get your Goat if you don't tell them where it is hidden.
If you are talking about the above Daves post, notice he only used it in the corners at the ceiling.
Do you believe that area will see much more humidity than some other part of his bathroom that is paper taped with paper faced gypsum board?[email protected]
Good Point. I will have to think about that.

I'll see if I can post some pics of this thing when I'm done. It is a dog wash station in the new kennel building/studio I'm finishing for DW.
I came across a 25x72" stainless steel sink from a photo processing lab several year ago. It is only about 6" deep, so it may not be deep enough for her. I also bought a faucet with a spray hose hookup, like you see in commercial kitchens, for her to use.
If you have ever bathed a dog, you know how much water is going to get slung around. Fortunately she has short dogs, so I don't think they will get the ceiling or top area of the tile surround wet.
I haven't set any tile in the last 15 or more years, and this will be my first experience with cement backer board. DW is a perfectionist to the 9th degree. (I thought I was picky untill I married her.)
I'll likely have more questions as I go along, so keep your ears on for me.

Exactly what Eric said. It is only a few inches at the ceiling. This is not a steam shower, or the ceiling would be tile on CBU to handle the moisture.Bill

If you are talking about failures you have had using mesh on drywall.............did you set it or first coat with taping compound or d-bond?
It's a no no to set mesh tape with compound, it has been discussed at some lenght here.

I use Straightflex tape and Durabond
