I’m looking for a dust collector. I don’t need super capacity, but I need quietness, quality and filtration effectiveness. I remember using a collector once that was portable. It only had the lower bag so it tended to plug up with dust. The nice thing about it was that it was very quiet. No lounder than a loud humm. As I recall the impeller was mounted horizontally over the bag and was made of plastic. Anybody recognize my description?
What are your recommendations for a portable dust collector?

Tim,
What's your budget and need's? On the low end, a craftsman 6.75HP (really 1.9) "shop vac" and a pair of ear plugs does a good job. Never seen a quite AND effective system in my life that was not remotely installed.

I actually have that "shop vac" at home. It's not too bad if you buy the optional muffler. Cost? I don't want to spend anything!
How are these things for just cleaning up around the shop?
I have a Penn State Industries Model DC-1B (I think) . It's a real 1.5 hp, 5 micron bag , 1050 scfm. It's great, no problems, and if you run some ducting you'll love it. Cost around $250. They also have a more portable 1 hp model available.
