I’ve hung lots of hundreds of doors over the years, mostly exterior rehangs- but I’ve never got the chance to do a dutch door. seems it wouldnt be that different, but I’ve seen some so botched I couldn’t figure out how the installer screwed up so bad-
any tips, things to look out for?
this is a 2’8″ interior- jamb currently holds a hollow core formed 6 panel- homeowner wanted to cut and use existing door- I told him it could be done, but he wouldn’t be saving much …

Greg, my experience with em is that they can be as much a pain as a french door. What makes it hard or challenging is that you are hanging two and trying to make them work perfect to the opening and to each other. Mix different sizes of panel, glass over wood or an unplumb jamb and you compound the difficulty. The botched up part would probably be evident on even a single door hung by some. Have had the opportunity to struggle with jambs I've set myself and to hanging to an existing jamb. The straightness of the hinge side is critical as are the shim locations in relation to the hinge locations. Quality hinges that don't have slop also help you keep things in line. Were you going to put a ledge on top of the bottom door? Or maybe rabbit the two panels to mate like is done on exteriors? You might consider hanging one panel first and then fitting the second before final cut/hanging, for a good fit of the two. Since I never rec. proper schooling in this, maybe I'm not even close. Hopefully someone that has will type in. Best of luck.
*Calvin- you say you had no formal ed? But you just went out & figgered out how while doinit? Sounds like the best ed. you can get- make a mistake once & remember NOT to do that again, huh? Dats how I learned two!the doors are gonna be rabbited together-& thats what I was planning-hanging the top panel- then hang the lower section to the top. I haven't even looked at the jamb yet- I finished their kitchen a couple weeks ago, this afterthought appeared when the daughter started walking...thanks for your thoughts & time,gb
