Maybe ya should rethink the cross burnin? You'd have to do it outside and it might be misunderstood.

Boy, I hope someday I can learn to scam easy money out of churches. That's my life goal. And I'll be sure to post here on BT so everyone knows what a jerk I am.
I'm already visualizing the duct tape over your mouth.
In fairness Boss I don't think he means to scam. The cross looks very nice and a church has to buy a lot of items like pews and all from someone. I venture to say a few churches here would like to buy a well made portable cross.
Not all churches have a good carpenter among them that can afford to donate material and labor every time there is a need.
I applaud his entrepreneurship.
Not to pick on you, I agree with you somewhat.
"The cross looks very nice and a church has to buy a lot of items like pews and all from someone. I venture to say a few churches here would like to buy a well made portable cross."That is all true. But that is certainly not the intent that I got with from the title; "Easy $200 clear", and the tone of the message.
Ya I know. I was trying to give the benefit of the doubt.
A friend of mine that is actively protesting the war asked me recently if I would make about 4500 or so crosses. Whatever the loss of soldiers was at that point. I called him back with a price that I thought was very fair using wood lath strips and all painted white. He accused me of taking advantage of him and the protest movement, that I should donate this. I told him that presumes I agree and I frankly avoid getting into political discussions with my overzealous friends and this was business. I didn't get the work and I may have lost a friend, at least until he regains his mental balance.
One mans mercenary profit is another mans livelihood. All in where you stand I guess.
You are what you hear...
Tom...I have absolutly no issue with you making monsy from crosses. Its legal and it ain't hurtin' anyone, it feeds your family so.....
The church has some of the biggest scams going IMO...not having to pay taxes like the rest of us for starters....especially on all the real estate they own.
And Mel can do what he does too...its a free country. Doesn't mean I have to watch his movies or buy crosses....Now if you could chisel me a Buddah....
Hey, if I could pop two sticks together in a cpl a hours for a cpl a hundred bucks I'd do it too...big deal!By the way that cross looked very well done and I can't imagine you made all that much money from it anyway. The material had to cost you at least seventy five to a hundred bucks and the labor had to be at least a half a day by the time allz said and done...no? Doesn't even seem worth it unless you had a lot of orders. If Blodgett says, Tipi tipi tipi it must be so!

Thanks for the considerate reply.
My normal rate is $20.00 hour. Had an hour of design, and took an hour to drive to town to get the material. 8/4 ash is $2.67 bd ft rough. Since my planer is on the fritz, I had'em plane it to 6/4 S3S, $16. Total for material, $58.72. Spent 6 hours on construction. 8 hours at $20=$160.
Center was half lap. Feet were lapped 3/4" with the rail full 6/4. 1-1/2" radius bandsawed on feet. Post has full wedged tenon with 1/8" shoulders. Sanded to 220, with ends chamfered. Edges broken throughout.
Told the customer his bill was a little less than $220, but hel liked it so much he gave me $250. Not gonna argue when people shove money at me.
Four more and I can buy a new planer, and/or a new cab saw.

I was looking at a smallish Buddah statue to put above that stone wall at the end of my drive in the flower bed. I saw one that was just so so made of poured concrete in a mold and that went for two fifty. They must have poured two hundred of em' at one dollar each in material for the cement and next to no labor...well, they did have to por the cement into the mold. I tried talking them down to two hundred cash but they wouldn't budge one dime.

My problem with this is the "easy $200 clear" part. He's not talking about high quality workmanship or anything related to homebuilding at all. Sometimes I pick tag lines for specific reasons - But most of the time I don't. In this case - Andy once said he like my tag lines that were quotes. So I always try to pick one for him that has a name connected to it. In this case, that was just the next tag line in the file that was a quote. I didn't pick it specifically for this thread.

Boss, you're full of hot air!
He's not talking about scamming or overcharging anybody. He's creating a work of art and offering it in a timely manner to the market that could accept it or reject it. It's free marketenterprise at it's best. it's no different than selling trusses to a church.
For what it's worth, I looked at his numbers and mentally decided that he's way too cheap and I would never offer that much service, materials and skill for that measly $200!
Step down from that high and mightly "church" throne and cut the guy some slack.

Ya know...this'd be a perfect set up for a joke in progress. The church, brainwashing, cults, money....its a work in progress. I'm having an epiphany I think... So a guy walks into the church of the harvest moonies with a giant home made cross slung over his shoulder and a change belt around his waist. The guy has the body of a swimmer and looks a little like a hippie I knew from the sixties. He's even sportin' a set of Oshkosh and he wasn't even a farmer...I think he was a balding Jew carp actually...so the guy has this epiphany...he says to the congragation..."hey, congragation.....I got this cross to bear....If Blodgett says, Tipi tipi tipi it must be so!

I think I made 2 mistakes in this thread. First, maybe I didn't explain myself well enough. I think the fact that this is a symbol of Christianity makes it worth some respect. I realize that not everyone is a Christian, but that doesn't matter. I think that ANYONE's beliefs are worthy of some respect, even if you don't agree with them. For instance - I personally think the people who are muslims and believe in the Koran are dead wrong. But I further believe that God gave all men the free will to worship as they chose. So I don't mock what they believe or degrade them. Based on that, I'm saying that making any kind of "religious" symbol and then bragging about how much money you made off of it is really low class. The 2nd mistake I made was reading the thread at all. From past experience I knew the OP was a jerk. I don't know what posessed me to read his post. But I screwed up. I don't think any of my posts were hostile. Certainly no more hostile than posts in the tavern are every day around here.

I find that statement contradictory. Calling someone's beliefs "dead wrong" is, in fact, degrading.
Granted, there are Muslims who misinterpret the Koran and use that misinterpretation to commit atrocities. I agree that those people are dead wrong, but your statement lumps about 1 billion people (about 1/5 of the worlds population) together. What exactly are ALL of these people wrong about?
There are aspects to Islam that are very appealing. Such as the strong emphasis on personal responsibility, strongly monotheistic (only one God), all people are created equal, etc. Conversely, it's easy to find teachings that I would find repugnant. Any religion can inspire noble or horrid behaviour.
Here is a brief description of Islam: http://www.religioustolerance.org/isl_truth.pdf. Take a look. You might be surprised.
I'm not here to defend it. I don't know enough about it. But I would think twice before saying the world's 2nd largest religion is "wrong".

"There are aspects to Islam that are very appealing....all people are created equal"

Yes, to put it mildly, there has been a lot of poor treatment of women in the name of Islam. There is no "head of state" in Islam (like the Pope in Catholicism), so it's hard to tell what the official position is. Like the Bible, writings in the Koran can be found to support virtually any moral viewpoint.
I call it the "gay parade" syndrome. The vast majority of any group tends to be middle-of-the-road types, but the ones we see (because they seek exposure and the media is only too willing to oblige) tend to be on the fringes. Not all gay men dress up like drag queens. Not all Muslim clerics teach that women are second-class citizens.
No one speaks for me, regardless of which group I might appear to belong to.

IMHO, Boss has (and myself) have gotten way more feedback than expected. What I intended as a "tip" to make a little extra cash morphed into some kind of moral justification that religious icons should not be made for profit.

Imerc, if you recall European history since the inception of catholicism in rome, Christianity has been used as an excuse to conquer, kill and control as well. The heirarchical structure of the catholic church was pretty much assembled to fit easily into old feudal europe and be used as a tool for oppression and control.I can't speak on Hinduism or Buddhism specifically, although much of Mao Tse Tung's revolutionary philosophies were based on the teachings of Confucius. The same with Islam or Muslim religions.A text can always be broadly interpreted to meet the needs of the social order/interests of its leaders. There are many on the 'christian right' who interpret the teachings of the new and old testament quite a bit differently than mainstream christian followers.
I hope you mis-spoke because Mao Tse-Tungs philosophy is based on Marxism. Maybe you were thinking Lao Tzu (Toa Te Ching?)
No, I didn't mis-speak. Although Mao Tse Tung drew a lot of his beliefs from Marxism, no doubt, but the cultural differences are clear. Confucius and his teachings were far more applicable to the cultural beliefs and mores of the time and there are some differences. Lao Tsu may have had some influence, but I believe its pretty well accepted that Mao's communism does have differences from Marx's euro-central interpretation. Now I have to go back and find some authors to quote because its been awhile since I even studied Marx or confusius or their effect on communist practice/revolution.
This is way over my head : > {
