Thanks Pony
I just got contacted about doing a stair project for a friend of a friend deal.
thats pretty cool, as long as you do your calcs at home before you go to work.An inch to short. That's the story of my life !
bstcrpntr --- I hope to grow into this name.
where it helped me is when having a known space that i had to fit a stair into... by using an 1/8" or 1/4" shorter tread and putting that extra 1/8" or 1/4" on the nose/overhang in a 12-14 rise stair i can "find/gain" 2-4" at the bottom landing i might need...
It also helps in knowing i can order a 14' 2x12 vs a 16' that i would have guessed i needed for the stringer... all this might be a known to guys who build stairs everyday but when you go months between em... this can help
the other part i use everytime is the running measurments tread /rise point to point
take'n the time to mark this off first with stringers on edge i mark em all off at once, I still use my screw stops on my frame'n sq but this keeps you from "gain'n or lose'n" as you go...
I know most of you guys build to plans that should have all this with the specs... but 99.9% of what i do is DOS (design on site)
I have filed a deeper notch/line on the base of one saw i use for cutting stringers so i can see it very clearly so that i stop dead on with no overcut everytime... i also like the thin blade for this...
just toss'n all this out because this was the first time i've had a project that had 14 staircases and only 4 were the same... knowing where they had to fit, I printed out a sheet on each staircase and marked it for each unit... make'n note of the degrees of incline so i didn't waste alot of time set'n up my saw for blocking ect... helped me to know the cuts were 37degrees or whatever before i started...
hope this helps
