I’m getting ready to build my detached garage with loft workshop. I’m trying to build the largest possible loft with the greatest headroom while minimizing my foundation square footage and siding(log siding). What style, framing method etc will get me this efficient workshop? Any suggestions? Attic trusses? Gambrel roof? Conventional framing? Which height of knee wall? Stairway inside or out? Etc. I’m trying to stay around 24×24 or 24×26.
Any suggestions or plan ideas are greatly appreciated.
Thanks

24' attic trusses with a 12/12 pitch will only net you about a 12' room with 5'~ sidewalls. Hardly enough for a serious workshop.
Gambrel trusses would give you more area to work with, depending on what pitch you pick for the steeper part. But they would be quite a bit more expensive to build and install .
How about putting a 28' attic truss at 11/12 or so on it, and cantilevering the overhang ? That would give you a bit more height at the kneewall, but would also be more expensive. Less difficult to roof than the gambrel, though.
*story & a -half with a structural ridge..bring the center lally column up thru the 2d floor to halve teh span of teh ridge too...you can blow out a shed dormer to add interest..so.. figure 9 feet for the garage floor1 foot for the floor system..4 feet for the 2d floor sidewall..a 6/12 pitch would give you 10 feet at the center..
*If it were me the garage part would be the secondary issue and the workshop would get priority, therefore I'd drop the garage ceiling as low as I could (code?) and make my side walls above at least six feet high. Pitch the roof at 12/12 put in 2x6 collar ties low enough to make room for my wood storage.I'd put in an outside stairway behind the garage, good enough to carry my cabinets etc. to the ground. Windows that were low enough to stick wood out of and still use my saw.
*Might check with your building dept to see if there is a height limit you must comply with.
