The interior walls of my Mother’s masonry house has a major grey beard growing on the bricks opposite the concrete stoop/stairs, and more where the ground level is very close to the top of the foundation. The brick itself appears to be deteriorating. The basement floor of my house has a similar, though more nicely trimmed, beard. What is the best course of treatment for this efflourescence? I am assuming there is a moisture problem in the first case, but about all I can do is caulk where the stoop meets the wall. There was a 1-1/2″ gap between the wall and stoop, but the neighbor filled it with concrete. Might that be preventing air circulation? My basement is dry, but the house is 71 years old. What is the stuff? Salts or bioligical?
Thanks,
Scott
