It looks like a set of gas logs ... ceramic fake logs ... but instead of a gas fire there is a halogen light bulb that shines through a moving image to make fake flames. Some have a noise generator to make the crackling sound. You do get some heat off the lamp. Here's my opinion: suppose you wanted to go out for a really nice steak dinner (real wood burning fireplace) but had to cut the budget a little so you went for a really nice burger (the gas logs), but then cut back even farther and went for a tofu burger (electric fireplace).
The proponae logs at least give you a real flame.

Tofu burger costs more!
Maybe the gas log is really nice burger at a restaurant, but the electric is a Big Mac.

Maybe tofu is more expensive, you'll never get me to answer that. My point was, it's like the old Wendy's commercial "where's the beef?""Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

Real wood fireplaces are great, except they are a net energy loser. (And Messy and a fair amount of work.)
Propane are OK in my book, but they aren't as energy efficient as they might be.
The electric ones..... Er, a matter of taste, I guess.
"Unvented" gas log sets are 100% "energy efficient" and are great if you like turning your whole house into a chimney and don't mind health risks/consequences.

Put a LCD or LED flat screen on one wall and surround it by bricks with radiant heater in them. You can buy video programs that give yu teh crackle sound thru the 'surround sound' speakers also.
Plus then it is multi use, otherwise quite a waste????
Hek, being facecious, but maybe if the HO likes electric fireplaces, they'd like teh multi use idea better???
Do you know if these people have actually looked at an electric fireplace? Okay, get an electric fireplace to use once a year for Christmas, and guests and relatives will accept that. Get one to actually substitute for a real fire or gas logs, and guests will really wonder about you. But, if it takes it to sell a house in these times, maybe go for it. I immediately have forgotten and have generally not returned to my former houses, just because I can't bear to see what the goofballs have done to them.
