I’m about to install a electric radiant heat wire under my bathroom tile. The system is just heating wire held in place by plastic strips that are stapled to the floor around the perimeter. On top will be 8″ tile.
The directions say I can either put down a fill coat first to bring the floor up to the top of the wires (1/8″) and let it dry before applying the tiles (recommended for 4″ tiles) or I can apply the tiles at the same time as the fill coat. With 8″ tiles I seem to fall into the second category which looks much faster.
Does anyone have any experience with installing this stuff and what techniques did you use?

I agree that laying out the thinset only once would be faster if using larger tiles - if you are an experienced tile setter. But if not, you may have trouble laying the thinset evenly with all those wires in the way. For a non-expert, I would suggest allowing the extra half day to cover the wires. Then come back and lay the tiles normally. -David
*How long do you think that I should wait for the initial coat to dry before laying the tile. In other words when can I walk on the initial coat of thin set.
