I am doing some remodeling in a 1960’s condo that has electric radiant heat in the “cottage cheese” ceiling. The client wants to lose the cottage cheese, and I need a recommendation on how best to do this. I am reluctant to just apply a new layer of drywall over the ceiling for fear that hte nails or screws will penetrate the wires.
We also need to install some recessed ceiling lights, which requires that we move some of the wires out of the way to make room for the cans. How do I restore the wiring into place where the old plaster has been taken out? The wires were originally impregnated into ceiling plaster, and if I patch with new drywall, the wires will be just sitting on top of the drywall. Is this OK?
Thanks,
Joe

The easiest way to do the ceiling is to mud it and sand, knock down popcorn with sander first then mud. You do not want to disturb the ceiling for can lights we ran cable lighting from wall to wall to avoid ceiling penetration can be patched but it is a pain and risky.

thank you for your advice about smoothing the ceiling.Re ceiling lights:We are not actually putting in recessed lights. We need to mount a jbox for a hanging fixture. The ceiling is already opened up an we have a 2x 6 ft section that needs to be repaired. Any thoughts on how to patch this, given all the loose wires?Thanks.....
Usually you can just wet the cottage cheeze and it scrapes off easily with a 6" putty knife.
If it has been painted it will not come off that easy and with the heat it will have baked on, Is the ceiling popcorn over plaster or sheetrock or is it a plaster type popcorn?
