I am planning on starting on erecting an old log house this summer. I am planning on at least 2 years of effort. There is an old barn about 25 yds from where the house will be. My question is this Can I put in electrical service to the barn to use during the next 2 years and then transfer the main box to the house when i am ready? Would this be okay code wise? The barn is only 10yds from the road and existing powerlines.
thanks

I'm an advocate of putting in a 400Amp service in rural situations and yours sounds like a great candidate. You can put the service near or at the barn. That service will give you a 200A panel for your barn, well, chickenhouse, garden, etc and an additional 200A main breaker for the house.
With your barn close to the utility, you can run underground from your service to the house where you'll tie in to your 200A house panel.
Makes for a clean setup with lots of room for the future. Mine is set up that way and I love it. And it doesn't cost that much more up front.
And for now, with your service in, it's simple to run a temporary panel for your house while you're building.
