I’m not a professional, and need advice on matching up adjacent floor heights. I extended a room and the new plywood floor is 3/4″ higher than the existing slab floor. I was thinking of glueing two layers of Hardibacker to the slab to bring it up level with the new floor. Is that a bad idea? Should I nail it as well? Both floors will be covered with the same carpet.

Why hardibacker? Wrong product for the wrong application. Just put down the same thickness plywood to even the two floors up. Here's where you'll get more ideas from everyone. Regular plywood, painted on all sides, edges, etc then glued and nailed in place or any of numerous other products like treated plywood etc. Unless you're tiling the area though, hardibacker isn't the way to go.
Thanks for the reply. I was under the impression that putting wood on top of the slab was a big no-no, so I wasn't thinking plywood. But I see your point, in that there are a variety of ways to seal the plywood.
