I have a mountain vacation house that is episodically occupied and I am trying to simplify some of the tasks involved in closing the house down. When we depart, we turn off the water and drain the water from the pipes by opening valves in the subbasement. The valves are at the lowest points of the water system but we drain them into a bucket. There is a DWV very close to the valves and I’d like to drain the pipes into the DWV, and possibly use a solenoid valve to do so, but I do not know the proper way to do this. I don’t believe that one should make a direct connection between a potable water supply and the DWV. Even using a trap would be a problem, because I recall traps shouldn’t be placed in locations where they are likely to freeze, and the subbasement is well below freezing in the winter. Any advice appreciated.
