I don’t know if this would make sense or not.
With electrical rates going throught the roof out here in the NW does it make sense to put a timer on my water heater. We don’t have much use for hot water between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM.
On the surface it seems that it would…but. The water heater is in a un-heated crawlspace basement. The temp in the basement is probably between 45 to 55 degrees during the winter, depending upon the outside air temp. The water heater has one of those water heater blanket things in addition to its built in insulation.
Would the energy saved by not keeping the water hot for those 6 or 7 hours, compensate for bringing the cool water back up to temp in the morning? Any other concerns about something like this.
I realize the $ payback probably would be quite aways down the road, but with the electrical supply problem that we are going to have this summer, if it helps save some electricity I am willin to do it.
