I’m installing a new entry lockset and when I took out the old lockset I encountered wood falling out around half the latch area. Should I fill the gap with high performance wood filler by Minwax, or do I have to glue in and shape a piece of wood?

Ralph, are you talking about the "strikeplate" on the jamb, or the hole in the edge of the door itself? Either way, its a matter of security. If this is going to be the primary lock on the door, the wood filler won't cut it - more of a cosmetic fix. You should figure out why the wood failed, then correct the problem with a good wood patch. If you don't think you can make it strong and clean, you might look into a metal plate for reinforcement. Some of them aren't too bad looking, and it might solve a few of your problems.
If it wont be seen and wont affect the integrity of the door or security of family, I use bondo to repair the door ...and a metal lock plate to insure security of the family.
