Entryway Cover Material Choice PT or WRC?

Hey Guys,
I’m building a 2 ft projecting gable entry door cover, aprox 5 ft wide with a 5 in 12 slope roof. It will be supported by diagonals from the tip of each “top plate” to the building wall. I’d love to build it out of Western Red Cedar for the look, but concerned about the structural stability. Thoughts? WRC will be sufficient or should I build it out of PT and wrap it with WRC?
Thanks!

Similar to other framing species

If you look at this web page: http://www.tpinspection.com/download/LogProgramTechnicalGuide.pdf and specifically at the table starting on page 11 of the document you will see that WRC has similar structural characteristics to SPF - a popular east coast framing material. I'm guessing you are on the west coast, based on your desire to use WRC. Anyway, looking at the table you are mostly interested in the Fb (fiber bending) and MOE (modulus of elasticity) values. These are the ones that are most often discussed when it comes to framing material, and you should probably be looking at the values for #2 lumber. Without knowing your design and other factors like snow load I'm not seeing the need for a high strength framing material in your application.
So - I am basically answering your Q from a data standpoint - tempered by my building expierence. I do not have experience with using WRC framing material. About the only thing we see WRC used for around here is roof shakes. I'm sure one of the west coast guys will come along and answer your Q from a first hand experience point of view.
WRC will do fine.
