Ever been disappointed when using a professional service?
A while back when under the gun I figured it wasn’t worth the time to buy glass and reputty a few small wooden windows so I dropped them off at a glass place.
Went back to pick them up and the guy starts telling me how I can smooth out his putty marks yada yada. I’m thinking ‘for crying out loud why do you think I came here in the first place?’.
I held my peace and said nothing since he is the only local place and I don’t need problems in the future if I need to buy glass.
Got to looking at them and ended up doing them all over again anyhow. Then discovered he’d reused the old rustcovered glazing points. The place has been in business for decades.
Ok ok, I admit this is just a rant to get it off my chest.
Sometimes it’s just best to go do it yourself and be done with it.

Yep. I'm finding out that the more profesional they claim they are, the less they are.

Speaking of that, my small town bank has put,/is in process off putting, in a new ATM machine on the inside lane of their two.
That friggin'lane been tied up as unusable for over a month now.
How long is the normal down time for something like that?

We usually do it in a day or two. Worse case a week. What all are they doing?

Had to cash a check today so I decided to go inside to nosey it out instead of using the drivethru.
She told me that they had decided to make that lane a designated ATM only lane for the machine. I'm thinking holy cow now they have one lane of window service available.
It was the construction debri still hanging around and the inverted wheelbarrow hood ornament sitting on top of one of the old machines out there that had me fooled. :o)

We aren't allowed to do that. Once we start we finish. That's why we work a lot of late hours.

Rez.....you know I luvs ya brotha.....but you got no one to blame but yourself.
You payed someone to do a half azzed job and accepted it as such with future considerations. Now you wanna rant about it?
Sorry man. Someone screws me, they`re going to hear about it. And if they don`t make good, there will be no future considerations.
I don`t care if I've gotta walk ten miles, up hill, through snow, both ways to get better service elsewhere.

JD is right, perhaps a little extreme.
You mention future consideration..........when in reality, it is he that should be thinking future. You being perhaps the guy someone would call to get those windows done, mirror cut, glass replaced..........even a whole storefront perhaps............are the one that should carry the clout. I think it would be worth it to let them know the displeasure you had with their service. If not in person, then a short note through the mail.A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

On the other hand Calvin-------- sometimes people are just having an off day----or have things going on in their life of such a serious nature that would make OUR petty little gripes seem absurd.
20 years ago I had a Electrician referred to me. I contacted the electrician who informed me that he was pretty well retired---but his son was taking over the business and would be happy to re-wire my house for me.
I called the son out---he looked over the situation---gave me a price---and then mentioned that he had a Daughter in the hospital with Leukemia----- he mentioned that he spent a lot of time at the hospital---but that he would come to my house every day after my wife and I went to work------and he would be long gone before we arrived home
and that's how it worked---he left a few tools in a neat little stack in the corner of the basement----exactly the same way every day------ each day we returned home and the ONLY way we knew he had been there was that new outlets had appeared as if by majic------no dust,no dirt, funiture EXACTLY as we left it---etc.
On his last day he did something in a way I didn't really like------ but knowing his daughter was in the hospital------- I would have been a real horses 'patoot to complain
And I am glad I didn't complain---cause 2-3 years later I had a 4 day old son in the same hospital having major surgery--------- and that's when I needed the same "consideration" from MY customer.
something as minor as a puttied window--- I think I would choose to give 'em the benefit of the doubt----------
In fact--this fall I built a big arch topped storm window. Having replaced about 20 panes of glas sor so in this house I moved into this spring--- I figure I am pretty good at cuting glass--------- and puttying------but I didn't think I could cut the arched glass
So I took the project to the same glass shop my family has used for 3 generations( my dad bought A LOT of glass from them for his art projects)---anyhow--when I picked up the storm window I found that they had siliconed in the glas---instead of putty.
I thought about complaining for 2 seconds---cause I really wanted it puttied------ but quickly realized it wasn't worth the hassle
some things aren't worth the fight.

I understand what you're saying stephen and agree wholeheartedly that if there's a reason and viable way to acheive a good result, then by all means. However, bad day or not (and no heartlessness here), you shouldn't have to redo something you entrust in a professional to do. And yes, you have to figure out for yourself if it's worth bringing up or a stupid #### response to your (our) bad day.
Merry Christmas buddy! How's the town of Akron taking to Charlie Frye? I know Williard probably will have a parade in January.A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

I really don't follow football---and specifically the Browns since the Bernie Kosar era
so I don't know much about Fry----except that a year or so ago about every 3rd yard in town had a " Fry for the Heisman " campaign sign in their front yard.
In general I have become increasingly hesitant to ream out people over insignificant things----- often find myself watching somebody ream out a store clerk or a waitress over something unbelieveably un-important----and wonder" what is so horrible in your life that you have to take it out on this person"
couple of years ago I got treated REALLY badly by a gas station attendant. I smiled and drove away------- my wife was apoplectic--- couldn't believe I didn't ream the attendant a new one------------- I told my wife-----" look--WE just spent a fantastic week at the beach---SHE just spent the week in that nasty little booth here in Yokelville, Virginia----this encounter was nothing but a 30 second inconvenience for us-----SHE has to spend the rest of the day in that sardine can---who am I to get bent out of shape"?
Of course---if I had a new driveway installed on the wrong side of a house---or the wrong kidney removed--- I would probably squawk a bit LOL.

pretty much, the definition of "expert" is somebody from out of town with a suit. the expert wouldn't be there if there wasn't a chance of making money off the trip.boils down to the builder.President might have a sign on his desk saying"the buck stops here" he doesn't get sued if the buck stops to take a crap along the way.
got to add this. recently finished a job, 18,ooo sq ft. had a staircase[ one of several] that was to be covered w/ some kind of stone that was being shipped in from gondwana land or someplace and I didn't like the looks of things. we're talking 30 thousand lbs. of stone here. The building inspector liked the job, i asked him to fail it until he saw an engineering plan on the stair. only way I could get the homeowner to pay for my[ and my insurance companys] peace of mind. ended up stacking 60k lbs of sand bags on this stair after the eng. had strain gauges installed to measure deflection. stair passed the test, makes me glad I am sometimes an a-hole when ti comes to doing things right. ps gave the sand to a local group doing a playground in a poor neighborhood. turned out good all the way around.
I had an old Stihl 08 chainsaw that wasn't running real well. Took it to this place that had "Stihl" on their sign, figuring they knew what they were doing. (Didn't see any new Stihl chainsaws for sale, but some other brand)
Technitian says he'll take it apart tommorrow and check it out. a week later it's been taken apart, but not looked at. Over 3 weeks later same situation, my saw is in pieces, and hasn't been worked on.
Ask the older than dirt shop owner when I could expect it to be done.
"You are not one of our good customers, so we'll get to it whenever."
Left, and called the Stihl shop about 30 miles away, told them the situation. Owner says, bring your saw in and barring anything major it'll be done in 3 days.
Went back to shop 1 and paid the $10 "Estimate Fee" just to get my saw pieces back. Took it to the other shop. Done in 3 days.
Bought a new Stihl Farm Boss this year. Guess who got the sale? Better still; don't even try to guess how many friends and customers have heard about the difference between saw shop 1 and saw shop 2.

Hi Don, you are correct.
Where you been hiding?
Fortunately I've been hiding at customer's houses. Knocked out a couple kitchens, and been working with a family for a basement bathroom, (knocking out floor etc.) for January, as well as the small projects.
Wife?
She is healthier, but I was told when I got back that she is not going to return to work. So that has sparked some talk on the home front. Any more ....ah...."Talk" on your home front?
When You going back?
Haven't planned anything, but I certainly haven't ruled it out. Don't think it would be Laurel, but it would be neat to work somewhere else.
Great Christmas back at you.

Jim-
Glad to know you are keeping busy. Hope it lasts, and hope it stays fun.
On my end, there was more "talk". This week, I offered to go down and get the paperwork, and the offer was refused!!! Go figure. After the beginning of the year, I think we might get on the same page and work something out. I'm thinking this contract is going to be a Deusy.
Hope we get to meet again someday.

Ordered a glass shower door from local glass co.
Months go by, the shower is finished but I'm a long way from using it.
Stop by the glass place one day as I'm next door. Never ordered it. The original work order is there but nobody ever sent it any further. They say we'll put a rush on and you'll have it next Thursday. Tell them I don't need the $150 install that is on the invoice, just the door.
Wife picked it up while she was in town, I look at the invoice and it's $420. It was $385 when they quoted it, it was $385 + install when I looked it in the shop.
Call them and ask what's the deal. 2 calls & a day later they tell me"Sorry, all the paperwork we have says $420." Up yours.
Joe H
Been there too. Ordered a shower door and told two weeks tops cost $2000.
I said OK. After much nagging from me after 4 weeks it arrives NINE weeks late! Door gets installed and the guy gives me a bill for $2400!
I tell him I'll get back to him. I get home and write to him Price quoted $2000, Nothing had changed from day he took his messurements. Included a check for the $2000 and told him he was lucky to get that after holding up the job finishing for so long.
Stick to what you tell me and we'll be fine, be early I'm happy, be late I'm not!!
Great thread. I'm 58 years old and been around long enough and seen enough to know I should be thankful to have had as good a life as I've had. (Lost my 2 best HS friends to Viet Nam, they never got to hold newborns). Two great kids and a wonderful wife.
Still there are moments when I just can't let a genuine a**hole go unrewarded with at least a few of my words of wisdom.
