My uncle sent this piece of family history – a ticket from a lumber purchase by a relative in 1869.
The price seems high for 8 boards, but I am probably misunderstanding what has been purchased?
Can anybody help decipher this?
Thanks,
Fz

I don't think those are wood boards. The company sounds like a metal shop and "molding" (or moulding") boards are the replaceable cutting edges used on plows, bulldozer blades, etc.
They didn't have bulldozers in 1869, but they did have horse drawn excavating equipment that would have used molding boards.
Thanks guys for your wisdom on this. I was amazed at the handwriting too. I'll forward your answers to my uncle.
I'm the Uncle and I want to thank everyone who gave their input. My father who was born in 1890 and his father were both Blacksmiths. I was mistaken when I thought the invoice was for wood boards. The fact that it was a metal product has to be correct.

Mould boards are the sorta fan shaped pieces of a plow that flips the sod over.
cheers Rik
The only thing I can decipher is that it cost 60 cents for drayage or 69 cents. I can't see the last digit of the totaled invoice.
Drayage is delivery charges. You gotta feed the horses eh?

Not lumber. Mould boards or moldboards, are plow parts.
Drayage is shipping/transportation.
You already have the answer, but thanks for sharing the invoice. It is so rare these days to see easily read handwriting, mush less some writing that is actually beautiful to view.Troy Sprout

I'm just guessing, but I'd bet it's bars, bundles and kegs. Units of measure in olden times?

I would guess that bars = barrels
Barrels. That's more likely.
And remember, you know the honeymoon is over when bushels of kisses turn into a few pecks.
I was gonna say the same thing about the handwriting.
I rely on computers for legible writing.
Since it's an ironworks, they would sell some iron by the bar, some in a bundle, and other things, ie nails, in kegs....
BARS. BDLS. and KEGS
I think it's about beer & BaDLadieS...
