Exposed Floor Joists with T&G Flooring
Hello,
I want to design a cottage with exposed floor joists and T&G flooring above the main level. Although I’ve seen this 1000 times I’ve never had the opportunity to use this in a design. My question is, what is the maximum spacing I can use for the joists and what thickness/type of T&G flooring above will I need to use to achieve this. I’ve seen plenty of houses that space at 24″ o.c. and even some that I would have to guess would be closer to 36″.
Any technical help would be appreciated. BTW… I’m an Architectural Technologist that has designed homes and buildings for almost a decade so feel free to pile on the technical jargon.
Thank you in advance.

A friend of mine has done a bunch of 2 story duplexes using T&G 2x6 flooring on framing 36" or better on center. It was a great way to minimize costs by eliminating drywall and flooring at the same time and it looked great.
