Hello. Home much is too much when it comes to the r.o. and door jamb spacing? I am about to install one of my exterior doors and the r.o. dimension is 3/4″ wider than the jambs. This is what the door called for but it seems too wide. Should I build up the r.o. and get the clearance tighter? BTW, r.o. is 38 1/4 and the door with jambs is 37 1/2.
Thanks

Thank You Sir.
Yours is perfect. The casings will cover it. The spaces are easy to fill it with insulation. The spaces will accept shims easily. What's there not to like?
Must be the Aerospace industry in me coming out. If you say it's okay i'm good with it.THanks
Like Jim said.
Your R.O. framing might have been perfact a month or two ago, but framing lumber moves a bit as it starts to dry out. You will need the shim space most likely. Insulate with low expanding foam, it won't bow the door jambs.
We frame 2-1/2" over, so yours is fine at 2-1/4"
You use shims to set the door and fill that space, about 3-4 spots in the height of the jamb on each side.
The reason an RO is made wider is to do this and give you a way to allow for off level

3/4" total slop?
Sounds good to me!

Thanks guys. I feel better now.
When I follow other framers, it seems that all I use is the very tip of the shim.
I have to make sure I do my own framing every once in a while to use up all of those butts in my shim box.
