Good morning. Folks I have done a fair bit of carpentry work for have asked me to install tile or possibly slate over the concrete pad steps (2 steps approximately 3′ x 8′) of their front entrance. I have done a fair bit of interior tile over the years, but not much exterior work, so a few questions come to mind.
-The pads have an aggregate surface. Does this have any impact on a tile installation?
-There is one crack approximately 18″ long which the HO indicates was there when they moved in (several years ago) and has not changed since. Is there a way to deal with this with some underlying material?
-Any recommended brand of mortar to use?
Does this sound feasible or should I recommend against the whole idea?
Thanks for all your advice and cumulative wisdom
Robert

First thing to do is verify that the proposed tile is rated for outdoor use. Some tiles are frost proof and others will fall apart after a few freeze-thaw cycles. And slip resistance is an issue.
I'm sorry, I thought you wanted it done the right way.
