What are the considerations when deciding upon which wood to use on exteriors bearing in mind it will be painted. Can fir be used instead of redwood/cedar if it is preprimed all sides (and ends) and perform as well. When should it be kiln dried? There is a number of finger jointed products that are available, how do these hold up. With lumber prices going through the roof I’d still like to use the best product but at the same time stay within a budget. If something performs as well but is cheaper I’d use it. I have tried Azek (pvc trim) for fascia and it was terrible. Maybe there’s something similar but better. How do these products compare price wise?
Thanks

Here's a link to a thread from last week on the same topic. There's alot of good information and opinions in there that will answer most of your questions.

Just curious, but why did you find Azek to be a "terrible" product for fascia boards?
