Have seen several pictures of exposed trusses that are fastened together using large cast iron bolts and “large malleable iron washers, which distribute weight over a larger surface to prevent truss members from splitting,” so the caption said. The washers are quite thick and have flanges or perhaps channels. Bolts need to be long enough to go thru 2 2xs and a 4×6. Anyone know what I’m talking about (OK even I don’t know what I’m talking about!) and know a source for these. No one I’ve talked to here so far does, but I haven’t been able to show them the pix I’m talking about. (nor scan and post either).

the best is Teco Split-ring...which requires a special bit and a half-inch drill..
the split ring fits into the groove made by the bit and as the bolt draws the members together the split-ring compresses to give additional shear value..
this was discussed about last november.. see the archives

Thanks for the quick reply Mike. I like the washers I mentioned, apart from the utilitarian aspect, for the way they look. Big and beefy, I don't know if you'd call it Arts and Crafts or not. Saw a pergola that you could order from a catalog, so it comes predrilled for bolting together, rather than nails or screws, and uses those same washers. I am going for the same look, plus I may want to take it down/move it for the winter. Had no luck checking anyone's website.
Re the Archives, maybe people would check them more if the folder were at the top of the list with the others, rather than down at the very end?. I'll make that suggestion to Andy. Search on "washers" came up with a lot of threads from the "Threads - fiber arts" site! you mean there's not a thread with the exact topic/name that I'm looking for?!

Mike, Thanks for the link. Still don't see this listed in the archives tho; guess I need to spend a bit more time figuring out the layout. JK
