Hello!
I have a project coming up that includes the installation of some horizontally orientated hardie-siding and I’ve ran into some confusion on what fasteners to use… I called the Hardie manufacturer and was told to use 1-1/2″ roofing nails and be sure to hit the studs through the sheathing. Since then I’ve talked to several people who insisted on ring shank siding nails and not the roofing nails.
Has anyone had experience with either of these? Which do you prefer and why?
Thank you so much for any information!

I prefer 2" or 2 1/2" ring shank stainless siding nails because, why not. I'm only going to do it once and with ring shanks I know the nails won't walk out and with SS I know they won't rust.
I use 1 3/4” ring shank stainless steel roofing nails for blind nailing Hardie plank. The larger head helps with blow through. They are easy to get online.
Hitachi coil nailer and Maze double dipped galvanized coil nails. Did my two story cabin in Big Bear, CA about 15 years ago and it still looks great. The nailer and coil nails are also used when I nail up Hardi backerboard (both 1/4 and 1/2)
