Fastening Tyvek to Rigid Foam Insulation
I just completed the shell (foundation, framing, sheathing, roof trim, shingles) of my new detached 26’x28′ garage.
I’m going to apply a layer of 1-1/2″ rigid insulation on the OSB wall sheathing with cap nails, before installing Tyvek as the air barrier over the rigid.
I’m looking for suggestions on how to fasten the Tyvek to the rigid insulation board?
I don’t have alot of confidence in stapling to rigid, and even 1″ cap nails don’t give me alot of confidence.
Are cap nails the best option or does anyone else have any suggestions or fasteners that they have had good experience with?
Thanks everyone.

2" cap nails...
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming

Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!

The foam is an air barrier if it's taped and sealed.
What goes over th foam? How are you going to attach that?
What are you doing?

I'm constructing a rain-screen wall type of construction. The following materials comprise the wall (in application order from the stud face):
1/2" OSB, 1-1/2" Rigid Insulation, Tyvek, 3/8" x 2" Furring Strips, Lap Siding
This is a basic rain-screen wall system, and was also detailed in the Feb/Mar 2001 FHB issue.
I'm looking to install the Tyvek over the rigid as more of a water drainage plane, properly lapped top/down, instead of simple taped rigid joints which aren't exactly installed in a correct manner to flash away water on a drainage plane.
Hopefully that clarifies.
What are you going to secure your siding with into that 3/8" material? What holds the furring on? Ply rips or something else?
If you put the tyvek on and then the furring strips I wouldn't be concerned about using cap nails, where can it go?
I would be more concerned about the siding not being secure with only 3/8" to attach to. What kind of siding? What kind of fasteners?

I'm not sure that you need to use housewrap over rigid foam...I would think the foam does the same job. hmmm, I needs to think about this one...

I think the rigid foam MATERIAL would do the same thing as the Tyvek, but I'm not sure about the horizontal joints. I think I could simply tape the vertical joints, but the horizontal joints would have to be taped in a flashing style; after each horizontal course of board, I'd have to run my horizontal taping along the face of the board, over the top horisontal edge, then up the vertical OSB wall face. After that, I'd install the next horizontal course of rigid. This would work, but be pretty darn labor intensive vs. a final layer of Tyvek and not taping the foam joints, plus providing a uniform rain screen throughout seems more thorough.
As far as the previous question concerning the furring strips; I'm attaching those to the wall along the stud lines so they are fastened through the Tyvek, foam, OSB, then into the studs.
