I have several faucet sets in a bathroom that I installed about 15 years ago. They are quality faucets (Grohe), and performed fine for many years. Hopefully, they are good for many more. However, several of them have started howling and moaning when turned on. My experience with this on many other faucets is that the problem is usually with a loose or damaged washer, and replacing the washer usually solves the problem immediately.
Not with these. I have replaced washers and seats. On some of the faucets, this took care of the problem, but with others the noise goes away for a time, but then comes back–sometimes within days. I’ve checked these new washers, and they are snug and look just fine. The noise goes away when you open the tap fully, of course, but that’s no answer. The cold faucets are more prone to this than the hots, but sometimes it’s both. Anyone have any suggestions? I really don’t want to replace these–there are two lavs, two showers, and a tub.

Just like the faucet, the angle stops usually have washers in them as well.
I would check those for worn out rubber.
Plumbill--That may be true in some instances, for sure, but this noise is coming from the main faucet--I can even feel it vibrating in my hand. Steve
What about the packing seals?
If the steam is worn it might work it'self back and forth making the sound. Try tightening the packing nut and/or seals.
Might have to replace the stem. But I would really only expect to see that problem on much older units.
Bill--Thanks for the suggestion, but I forgot to mention that I have replaced stems also! Steve
