I’m installing a slate floor in my bathroom, I’ve put down 3/4 ply aswell as screwing down cement board. I’m just curious what type of thinset to use. I’ve got omnigrip, and some super premium two part thin set from mapei. Any suggestions. Is there a disadvantage to going with a mastic thinset?

Mastic works well for a kitchen backsplash. It cannot be used in a wet area, like a shower. I would hesitate to use it on a floor, but can't back that up with facts.
I like a latex modified thinset, either mapei or Custom. I think they're essentially the same. Never heard of Omnigrip. mapei and Custom both make unmodified thinset that you can mix with a liquid additive ... is that what you mean by the 2-part?
The one I usually buy is sumpin-sumpin-2. They also sell a -1 and a no-number. I'm thinking it's Mapeiflex 2, but could be wrong.

I've NEVER had a problem with "Custom". The cheaper bag...the one you "can" add the liquid latex mortar additive to. I totally believe in using the additive but be sure you use the right bag of Custom thinset.
Never heard of the other one you mentioned sorry.
Be stuck to da floor....feets don't fail me now....

The secret of Zen in two words is, "Not always so"!
When we meet, we say, Namaste'..it means..
slate = mapei kerabond mixed with mapei keralastic.
bulletproof.
I like the way mapei mixes vs custom ... just "feels" better ... purely personal.
might be the smell?

btw ... kera + kera = "disposable trowels"!
I get the cheapest I can find off the shelf at HD or Lowes ... buy one more than I think I'll need ... usually plan for 2 per day ... one before lunch ... one after.
Then toss them.
too hard to clean .. why bother.
keep the nice trowels for regular polymodified TSet.

It does have a kind-of sweet smell, doesn't it.
