Any opinions on using 15# or 30# felt under steel siding instead of tyvek. I think this would do a better job of keeping the sheathing dry but am worried about the tar paper affecting the steel siding–It won’t cause in to “wave” will it? I’ve seen this happen with vinyl and don’t want it to occur on my house. Thanks for any help DAN

Dan,
Most if not all housewrap type products will provide protection from bulk water behind the siding. I am not convinced that felt would be better in this application.
I'm curious, are you saying that felt behind vinyl causes oil canning (or waving), and that you think it would have the same effect on steel? And, if it caused this on vinyl, how did you know there was felt underneath? Are you suggesting that a black surface underneath the finished siding causes excessive heat buildup, or the felt bubbles due to moisture or what?
Tom
*Probably the reason the vinyl he saw was wavey was due to improper installation... ie, nailed tight and/or no room at ends for expansion.
*Wavy siding means it was nailed too tight and when it warped, it bent instead of just expanding.I prefer felt to tyvek but some don't. There was a big discussion a month or so ago on tyvek vs. building paper. Check it out. Alot of good info there.
