I prefer to build a standard rectangular gate with a 4×4 redwood frame and then attach Ix6 redwood pieces on the presentation side of the frame (sometimes someone wants 1×6 on both sides). This leaves me with a gate thickness of from 4 1/2 inches to 5 inches thick. Standard gate latches sold in lumbar yards or hardware stores don’t have a mechanism that allows a handle/latch mechanism to work in that thick a door nor would a standard door knob fit that thickness (I’d prefer not to use a standard door knob as the opening gap is about a half an inch and the catch wouldn’t reach the fixed post anyway). How do you deal with this problem especially on an outswing gate where a latch and trip mechanism still would not work as the gate won’t open with the handle part on the outside pulling toward you? Are there websites that sell gate latches for thicker than standard doors where the handle can be installed on the outside which is where you would want it for an out pulling gate?

thanks looks like that will work out fine...
I'm not sure where the problem lies - standard gate hardware works on the surface of the gate, so the thickness of the gate itself is not an issue. Perhaps you could post a photo or sketch, so we could see what the problem is?
My latest garden gate (I know, I know, you said you don't want to do your hardware like this).

That's a beautiful gate...
I used this on a shed door and would think it would work well on a gate also...
