I need to replace about 280′ of 48″ chainlink fencing. The old German gent who bult it originally has passed away. I want the same type posts or something else that will last. They have 1/4″ walls and are concrete filled. It is probably 45 to 50 years old and some of the posts are finally rusting out at grade level, ah, make that water level – 80′ of the fence runs through a pond.
Is there anything that will last in the water? It is at the edge of the pond so it is only a couple feet deep. What schedule posts and fabric should I be looking for? Thanks!~

how about 2" pvc filled with concrete? larry
hand me the chainsaw, i need to trim the casing just a hair.
The PVC with concrete would work for some time but it would fail due to side loads on the post after the PVC gets brittle, the best solution would be stainless steel but that is pretty pricey. I think a heavy posts were well casings but I belive you can get heavy galv post that will work for another 40-50 years.
Thanks for the reply. I am going to look into galvanized well casing - it should outlast me.
Check out plastic lumber by Bedford Technologies. I just used their 4x4 (almost the full 4"). Many different sizes. Expensive and you have to pay shipping. Came out to about $5-6/ft. Heavy, definitely more flexible than wood, you can't nail into them (density), and screws may need to be pre-drilled. But they are UV stabilized, won't rot - should last at least as long at metal. But I would use them again.
Thanks for the tip. I'll check them out. Right now I'm considering well casing but I do want to look at other options.
I used the heaviest REBAR I could find and had it galvanized for a fence at the Jersey shore. Did this in 1976 posts are fine chain link has been replaced twice.
